Hemlock Woolly Adelgid

The Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) is a non-native invasive aphid-like insect introduced to the eastern United States in the early 1950’s. Presently, the HWA infests over 50% of the native range of the eastern hemlock. HWA feeds on photosynthate produced by the tree resulting in the dessication of the needles, which in turn prevents new bud growth. Without some form of intervention, either biological or chemical control, a mature hemlock can succumb to HWA infestation in as little as 4 years but may survive for up to 10.

The Eastern Hemlock is not only marvelous and majestic but also holds immeasurable ecological value throughout the eastern United States. Due to their habitat preferences and extreme shade tolerance, hemlocks provide unparalleled shading of mountain streams, critical wildlife cover, and important habitat for bird nesting.

Landowners can help fight the threat of HWA and Hemlock decline through the use of chemical controls. In large tracts of public land a beetle that has evolved with the HWA is showing some promise in reducing the pest population and hopefully will take over the role of chemical treatment in the future. Until this time comes private landowners can save their hemlock trees using established chemical controls and establishing a management/treatment plan for hemlocks in forest or landscape settings.

Carolina Hemlock Arborists LLC offers several treatment options for HWA that can be designed for your specific needs.

We would be glad to evaluate your trees and discuss with you the various options for treatment and control including:

 •   Imidacloprid soil injection
 •   Imidacloprid stem injection
 •   Imidacloprid insecticidal soap
•    Dinotefuran soil injections
